Our Founder

Early Life:

Shikshanmaharshi Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe was a visionary educationist, freedom fighter and social reformer whose life was dedicated to the transformative power of education. Born on 9th June, 1919 at Ramapur in Patan taluka of Satara district, his original name was Govindrao Dnyanoji Salunkhe. He had four brothers and two sisters. Bapuji's father's name was Gyannoji and his mother's name was Tanubai. He lost his parents at an early age and had to pursue his education amidst considerable difficulties.

Yet, his determination and love for learning enabled him to complete his B.A. in 1945 and B.T. in 1949. His deep interest in Marathi, Sanskrit and Mathematics, together with his powerful oratory, shaped him into an inspiring teacher and educational leader.

Bapuji's journey in education began in 1940 when he was appointed as a Rajguru in the princely state of Sondur. His strong patriotic spirit soon drew him towards the Quit India Movement. Later, he became actively involved in student and social activities and served in the Rayat Shikshan Sanstha from 1945 to 1955, first as a teacher and later as the headmaster of Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalaya, Rukadi. During this period, he demonstrated that education could become a powerful means of social change and could reach people who had traditionally remained away from educational opportunities.

Establishment of Shri Swami Vivekanand Shikshan Sanstha:

The most significant chapter of Bapuji's life began with the establishment of Shri Swami Vivekanand Shikshan Sanstha. On 19th October 1954, he laid the foundation of the institution at the Murlidhar Temple in Karad along with his colleagues. The institution was named after Shri Swami Vivekanand in November 1954 and was formally registered on 31st December 1954. It began functioning on 5th  June 1955. What started as a modest educational initiative gradually developed into a wide network of educational and cultural centres across Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Motto:

At the heart of Bapuji's educational philosophy was the motto “ज्ञान, विज्ञान आणि सुसंस्कार यासाठी शिक्षण प्रसार”— “Dissemination of Education for Knowledge, Science and Culture.” For him, education was never limited to examinations, degrees or employment. He believed that true education should develop knowledge, character, integrity, service, dedication and a sense of responsibility towards society. His vision placed equal importance on intellectual development and the formation of a good human being.

Sacrifices & Devotion:

What makes Bapuji's life particularly inspiring is the personal sacrifice behind his educational mission. He devoted his entire life and personal resources to the growth of the Sanstha. He donated his inherited property and contributed substantial amounts towards its development. His actions reflected a simple but powerful belief: education is a service to society, and the benefits of education should reach those who need them most.

Bapuji's contribution was especially significant for poor, rural and socially disadvantaged communities. Through the spread of education, he sought to remove the darkness of ignorance and create opportunities for people to improve their lives. His educational vision emphasized access and equity and sought to reduce the divide between rural and urban society. The institution that he nurtured became a means through which generations of students could acquire education, values and confidence to build better lives.

Awards and Recognitions:

His contribution received recognition through honours such as ‘Freedom Fighter’ and ‘Dalit Mitra’, while the people lovingly remembered him as ‘Shikshanmaharshi.’ His educational work was also recognized through the conferment of an honorary ‘D.Litt.’. by Shivaji University, Kolhapur.

Legacy & Contribution to Society:

The legacy of Shikshanmaharshi Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe is therefore much greater than the institution he founded. It is a legacy of simplicity, sacrifice, service and faith in education as an instrument of social transformation. The educational movement he began continues to reflect his conviction that every individual deserves an opportunity to learn, grow and contribute to society. His life remains an enduring inspiration to teachers, students and all those who believe that education is not merely a means of personal progress, but a powerful force for building a just, enlightened and humane society.
