Shri Sant Gadgebaba Mahavidyalaya, Kapashi was established in 1985 by the Honorable Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe, founder of our parent institution, Shri Swami Vivekanand Shikshan Sanstha, Kolhapur. Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe devoted his entire life to the noble cause of spreading education across every corner of Maharashtra, guided by his motto: “Dissemination of Education for Knowledge, Science, and Culture.” As a result of his untiring efforts, the society has established 412 branches, including pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools, junior and senior colleges, hostels, and other facilities. Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe was a visionary who lived for education, fought to impart it, and passed away devoted to his dream of empowering society through learning.
The founding of our college has a unique story behind it. The revered social reformer, the late Shinde Maharaj former Chairman of the Gadgebaba Trust, Pandharpur who played a pioneering role in starting this college to alleviate the hardships faced by students in this remote, hilly region. Being a close friend of Bapuji Salunkhe, he visited Bapuji and earnestly requested him to establish a college in his village, Kapashi. Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe accepted the proposal. Securing approvals from the government and the affiliating university required immense struggle from Shinde Maharaj, Bapuji, and the local villagers. Their perseverance bore fruit, and in 1985, Shri Sant Gadgebaba Mahavidyalaya, Kapashi was established with affiliation to Shivaji University, Kolhapur. The university subsequently granted the college permanent affiliation from June 2003 onwards. The institution also received recognition under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956 on March 31, 2006.
The college is located in hilly region village, Kapashi, forty kilometres away from the district place, Kolhapur of Maharashtra State at the latitude of 16.935505o and at the longitude of 74.01538o. As a single-faculty institution, more than 300 students enroll annually in the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) program, passing their examinations with commendable results. Initially, the college sought approval for both Arts and Science streams, and the University granted permission for both. However, due to low enrollment in the Science stream, it had to be discontinued. The Arts faculty began with approximately 100 students in its inaugural year. The college established departments in Marathi, Hindi, History, English, Sociology, Political Science, Geography, and Economics. The University granted approval for Marathi, Hindi, History, and Economics as major subjects, while English, Geography, Sociology, and Political Science were designated as minor subjects. The institution also attempted to introduce vocational courses; however, student response remained lukewarm.
The Mahavidyalaya strives to foster the holistic development of its students. Faculty members treat local farming families as their own, working actively to raise awareness about education, personal achievement, and community development while encouraging parents to educate their children. The college offers financial assistance to economically underprivileged students through the Student Aid Fund, and the library provides a Book Bank facility. Additionally, teachers conduct remedial classes for differently-abled students.
The institution publishes its annual magazine, Gadgebaba, to cultivate writing skills among students. Over the years, our students have won several university-level awards for articles published in the magazine across various literary formats.
Our students actively participate in sports at intercollegiate, zonal, national and international levels. Coming from a rugged, mountainous terrain, they possess natural physical fitness and stamina that can help them achieve excellence at state, national, and international levels. However, the primary barrier for these young athletes is the lack of structured training and modern facilities. A well-equipped gymkhana and gymnasium are urgent requirements to help shape their athletic careers and open avenues for recruitment in defence and security services.
Additionally, our students exhibit a strong inclination toward cultural activities, participating enthusiastically at the college level. Nevertheless, a lack of specialized coaching and limited recreational infrastructure hampers their advancement to higher-level competitions. While our students are intellectually capable of meeting modern career demands, a shortage of advanced audio-visual tools and ICT equipment currently limits their exposure to essential global skills.
We remain fully committed to nurturing the holistic growth of our students by upgrading our infrastructure, training, and educational facilities. By providing these essential resources, we aim to offer a strong launchpad that enables our students to enter the competitive world with confidence and excel in their chosen careers.
