About Sanstha

Shri Swami Vivekanand Shikshan Sanstha, Kolhapur is one of the well-known educational institutions in Maharashtra, with a long and inspiring tradition of spreading education among the masses. The Sanstha was founded under the visionary leadership of Shikshanmaharshi Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe, whose life was deeply devoted to education, social service and nation-building. Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe faced several difficulties in his early life, yet remained firmly committed to education. His experiences and his deep concern for ordinary people gradually shaped his vision of creating educational opportunities for the poor, rural and socially disadvantaged sections of society.

The foundation of the Sanstha was laid on 19th October, 1954 at the Murlidhar Temple in Karad in the presence of Bapuji and his colleagues. In November 1954, the institution was named after Swami Vivekanand, and it was formally registered on 31st  December 1954. The Sanstha began its functioning on 5th June 1955. From its humble beginning, it gradually expanded its educational activities by establishing schools, colleges, hostels and other educational centres. The source material records that the Sanstha grew into a large educational network with hundreds of cultural and educational centres serving students in Maharashtra and Karnataka.

The basic philosophy of the Sanstha is expressed through its motto, “ज्ञान, विज्ञान आणि सुसंस्कार यासाठी शिक्षण प्रसार” i.e. Dissemination of Education for Knowledge, Science and Culture. For Bapuji, education was not merely the acquisition of information or academic qualifications. Knowledge was connected with truth, character, integrity, service and dedication, while science meant applying these values meaningfully in everyday life. Therefore, the Sanstha has always emphasized the development of students as responsible, disciplined and socially conscious human beings.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe's contribution was his personal sacrifice for the educational mission. He lived a simple life and dedicated his resources to the development of the Sanstha. He even donated his inherited property and contributed personal funds for educational development. His commitment inspired colleagues, teachers, students, donors and well-wishers to participate in the growth of the institution.

The Sanstha's educational philosophy has particularly emphasized access, equity and social responsibility. Its efforts have aimed at bringing education within the reach of deserving students, especially those from poor, rural and marginalized communities, irrespective of caste and creed. In this sense, the institution has played an important role in creating educational opportunities and helping to bridge the gap between rural and urban society.

Over the years, Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe's work earned wide recognition. He was honoured as a freedom fighter and received the title ‘Dalit Mitra’. He was also respectfully known as ‘Shikshanmaharshi’ because of his lifelong contribution to education. His work ultimately resulted in a broad educational movement extending across Western Maharashtra and North Karnataka.

Today, the legacy of Shri Swami Vivekanand Shikshan Sanstha continues through its commitment to education, values, social responsibility and human development. The institution represents the belief that education can remove social and economic barriers and open new possibilities in the lives of ordinary people. The journey of the Sanstha, therefore, is not simply the story of an educational organization; it is the story of a vision that began with one dedicated teacher and gradually developed into a wider movement for education and social transformation.
